"Raindrops on roses
And whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells
And schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver-white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things"

From--"My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music

Some of these favorite things--snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, silver-white winters that melt into springs--accurately describe a couple of our favorite things about winters in Black Mountain. There's so much to love about winters in Western North Carolina, from the unique gifts crafted by artists and makers that call our region home, to the amazing food and libations crafted in WNC, to the holiday spirit that shines at NC Arboretum, The Biltmore, Grove Park Inn, and dozens of communities, locally-owned shops, and our locals streets.

And since we're in the real estate biz, we thought we'd share about a few of our favorite communities and why they made our "nice" list!

Catawba Falls Preserve

Catawba Falls Preserve -- located within the Blue Ridge Mountains, just outside of Black Mountain and a short drive from Asheville -- quietly blends the sense of being far away from it all with the security of a gated community. The subdivision features 1+ acre homesites and larger estate parcels. It borders one of North Carolina's most beautiful natural treasures, Catawba Falls, a 304-foot cascading waterfall, located in the adjacent 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest. This mountain community offers residents 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and the moderate climate of western North Carolina. Nature lovers will enjoy the community trails, which wind through hardwood forests and appreciate the property's many mountain streams teeming with trout. Catawba Falls Preserve is the perfect destination for adventure or relaxation. Developed by Bluegreen Corporation, which has respected the natural environment in development for over 30 years, extraordinary care was employed to preserve old-growth trees and natural habitats in Catawba Falls Preserve. The community maintains architectural design guidelines to provide cohesiveness and to protect homeowner values. Catawba Falls Preserve is an idyllic site for the ultimate peaceful treat for vacations, family, or retirement.

Falcon Ridge at Haw Creek

Falcon Ridge is a new real estate development in the city of Asheville, NC. It is a pristine 42-acre community of 28 home sites and is only minutes from downtown. Falcon Ridge combines the splendor of mountaintop living with the convenience of a short commute. It offers a close proximity to schools, libraries, and other services making it an ideal location in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Falcon Ridge offers breathtaking mountain views and is situated close to Asheville's historic Pack Square and the Biltmore Estate. It provides an ideal setting for your North Carolina mountain lifestyle. Unlike most mountain communities, Falcon Ridge offers city fire and police protection, city water and sewer, natural gas, sidewalks, and more.

The covenants and restrictions have been carefully crafted to protect the mountain setting and to build an active Homeowners Association. 40% of the development has been set aside for common green space and hiking trails.

Laurel Ridge

Nestled in the mountains near the Burnette Reservoir, Laurel Ridge offers the combination of privacy and convenience. Enjoy views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Mount Mitchell. This beautiful community sits approximately 15 minutes outside of Black Mountain and 30 minutes from downtown Asheville, NC. Our peaceful, gated, spectacular mountain setting backs up to the Asheville watershed and is surrounded by acres of unspoiled forest. Our dedication to living in harmony with nature, natural beauty and a real sense of community are very important to all residents whether they own property here as a vacation home or year round residence. Over 45% of our 190 lots have been built on or have homes under construction. Laurel Ridge is a rare find as mountain communities go. All roads are paved and we have our own community water system. The Black Mountain Fire Department has a sub-station right in Laurel Ridge and there are fire hydrants throughout the neighborhood. The neighborhood has underground utilities, including phone lines, at each lot and so much more to offer.

The Settings of Black Mountain
